SUGGESTIONS FOR F~S WEEK ACTIVITIES

- SHOPPING MALLS DISPLAYS with photographs of emergency
procedures, helicopter and ambulance exhibits in parking lots
and booths with emergency personnel handing out materials
and answering questions.

- 'BLOOD PRESSURE CHECKS may be conducted in conjunction with open
houses and tours or arranged as a drive through blood pressure
check.

- HEALTH FAIRS including hospital and booths at community or
county fairs.

- CLASSROOM TOURS AND TALKS in which students may tour an
emergency department as a field trip and emergency department
personnel may visit schools to talk about F~S.

S~ULATED ~ERGENCY DEPARTMENT including life-size photographs
of an emergency department and its staff in a mall. Shoppers
walk through the exhibit and learn what to expect and who they
would see during a visit to the emergency department.

GA~ OF LIFE is similar to the simulated emergency department.
Shoppers in a mall spin a large wheel which lands on a specific
emergency illness or injury. The "patient" then walks through
the emergency department experiencing the questions asked and
the type of treatment provided for the particular emergency
situation. Explanations can be provided through written mater-
ials in the exhibit thus reducing the number of personnel to
staff the exhibit. The same arrangement would be utilized by
ambulance providers and rescue squads.

- POSTER CONTEST in which children are invited to design posters
depicting F~ and the entries can be displayed in hospitals
or shopping malls. Winners could receive small trophies or
prizes. Judges could include emergency department physicians
and nurses, hospital administrators and F~Ts. In order to
receive media coverage, the judges might also include a media
representative.

- VIP TOUR of the hospital emergency department, rescue squad
~-~es, or ambulance base. Local elected officials, com-
munity leaders and a media representative should be included
in the tour group.

MOCK ~ERGENCIES in which local people play out a scenario of
a medical emergency.

HANDOUTS such as bookmarks with poison charts on them, medical
consent cards for minors and charts with First Aid tips.
