COUNTY

TO: Local Health Departments ~ ~ ~,.'*~.~

FROM: Jimmie L. Rhyne, M.D., M.P.H., Head /~_
Maternal and Child Health Branch ~
SUBJECT: Additional Prenatal Allocation for FY 84-85 MCH Contract Budget

The North Carolina General AssemblY has recently appropriated an additional
amount of money to improve prenatal care through instituting strategies for
the prevention of prematurity.

The allocation for cabarrus County Health Dep~rtment is $6~649. These are
continuation monies, and thus can be used for increased staffing in prenatai
clinics, and other ongoing activities to reduce prematurity. These monies
cannot be used for office, data processing or major medical equipment,
construction, and motor vehicle purchases.

In order to receive your health department's allocation, please submit a
budget revision to your FY 1984-85 MCH Contract Budget, along with a one-page
narrative and budget justification to the MCC Supervisor in your DHR Regional
Office by September 15, 1984. The one-page narrative must give a brief
description of how your health department plans to implemen~ prenatal risk
assessment for preterm delivery. Optional strategies for the use of these
dollars include:

1) establishment of additional prenatal clinics;
2) increasing maternity outreach and follow-up services;
3) enhancement of patient education to include prevention of
prematurity;
4) improvement of labor and delivery services;
5) improvement of means of transportation for prenatal clients;
6) provision of an increased opportunity for maternal health nurse
training for current nursing staff; and/or
7) enhancement of multidisciplinary care for prenatal clients
through the addition of social work, nutrition, and health
education to current medical and nursing care.

Thank you for your timely consideration of this matter. We hope that this
support from our state's General Assembly will enhance greatly the health care
for mothers and infants in your community.

JLR/NPH/mf

cc: MCC Regional Supervisors
Administrative Procedures Consultants
MCH Program Managers

'
