Norlh Carolina Deparlment of
Nai-dral & Econo, mic Resources
JAMES E, HOLSHOLISER. JR.. GOVERNOR · JAMES E. HARRINGTON, SECRETARY
Route 1, Box 72A, Mt. Holly, N.C. 28120
.................... September 16, 1983

Cabarrus County Conmissioners
c/o Mr. Charles McGinnis
County Manager
P.O. Box 707
Concord, N.C. 28025

Dear Sirs:

1 have recently examined the Cabarrus County landfill which you are interested
in plantiRg in pines.

If you are interested in erosion control, I recommend pla~ting improved Vir-
ginia pines. If you anticipate using this for wood production, I recommend planting
Loblolly pines. Prices for both are on the attached sheet.

This area can, be divided into three basic..portions;

1) the upen field
2) the main landfill area
3) the slope next to present landfill

Options for planting these areas are as follows:

1) Bushog areas 1 and 2 and machine plant pine seedlings
2) 8ushc9 area 1 and chemically spray area 2 with herbicides, followed by
planting

Area 3, which is on a steep slope will need to be planted by hand.

The scattered grasses and weeds present in all three areas will make them
susceptible to rodent damage. To reduce this, I reco~nend planting an increased
number of seedlings per acre (800 instead of 600), and m~wing between the rows
each summer.

Due to the difficulty of planting landfills iR pine seedlings, we cannot
guarantee survival of these seedlings.
If you are interested in plaoting these areas with county personnei or local
crews, seedlings are available from our Oivision at the following prices:

Improved Loblolly Pines $24/1000
Improved Virginia Pines $23/1000
Regular Loblolly Pines $16/1000

If you have fm'ther questions concerning this, please contact nm at 704/
827-7576.
Respectfully,
Laura F. Nackey "~_~'~-~

II
