HDR .....

October 25, 1983

Mr. Charles McGinnis
Cabarrus County
P. O. Box 707
Concord, NC 28025

Re: AlternatiVe Water Supply for Midland Area
NDR Project No. 187-06-39

Dear Charles:

Reference is made to my letter of October 14, 1983 concerning Item No. 3,
Package Treatment Plant at Rock Quarry site.

A site visit was made at the quarry in Midland on October 18, 1983. At
that time we talked with several of the workers at the quarry .site con-
cerning the quarry's present use and potential as a water supply. The
workers stated that the owner pumps water from the quarry to use as make-
up water on the plant site and for irriqation purposes. They also stated
that the water level in the quarry has ~ropped five feet this summer due
to the dry weather conditions and use for irrigation, etc. This would
indicate that the quarry has a questionable potential as a significant
water source for the County and the Midland area.

Therefore, we recommend that a detailed treatability study on the water
quality and a study of the safe yield of the quarry be made prior to any
expenditure of money to develop this as a raw water source.

If you have any questions, please call.

Very truly yours,
HE~2~, DURHAM & RICHARDSON, INC.
~ul~tson, Jr., P. E.
Project Manager
Environmental Engineering Division

PCWjr/bm
