NORTH CAROLINA DIVISION OF FOREST RESOURCES <br /> REPORT TO BOARD OF COUNTY C~IISSIONERS <br /> CABARRUS C©UNTY <br /> SECOND QUARTER - OCTOBER - NO~f~ER - DECemBER 1981 - 82 <br /> <br />FOREST~NAG~X~ENT <br /> <br />Received 21 forest management requests and have serviced 20 this quarter. This <br />consists of site preparation for tree plantiD~, pulpwood and sawtimber marking, <br />thi~uning pine stands, harvesting timber, forest management plans made, timber <br />stand improvement, and referrals to consulting foresters. <br /> <br />~o hundred three acres of sawtimber and pulpwood ~ere marked or designated for <br />thinning or harvesting. Thirty-four acres were thinned, which cut approximately <br />416 cords of pulpwood. ~is brought about $16,224 to citizens of the county from ~ <br />the sale of pulpwood. <br /> <br />Ten acres were harvested, which cut 56,000 board feet of sawtimber, bringing about <br />$6,000 to citizens from the sale of timber. <br /> <br />Ten acres were prepared for planting, which consisted of using a bulldozer and <br />piling the brush. <br /> <br />~ive lando~ners have signed for cost-sharing assistance for site preparation and <br />treeplanting under state and federal programs. No ~oney is available at this <br />time and these requests may have to be carried over to next year. <br /> <br />FIRE WOOD <br /> <br />WE have assisted 16 lando%.mers t~ get fire w~od for heating their homes. Abeut <br />72 cords were sold for fire wood which brought about $576. This wood was cut fr~n <br />areas which had been logged. <br /> <br />FOREST INSECTS AND DISEASES <br /> <br />No new spots of Southern Pine Beetle infestation have been reported this quarter. <br />~,;o old spots were salvaged, which cut t6 cords. Tnis brought about $624 fram the <br />sale of beetle-infested pine. No other insect or disease problems are present at <br />this time. <br /> <br />INFORMATION AND EDUCATION <br /> <br />Articles were placed in the Tribune and Independent concerning forest fire danger, <br />Smokey the Bear, tree seedlings and sales, fires, burning permits, and ashes. Radio <br />stations %~re notified during periods of high forest fire danger. We held a public <br />meeting on small wo~lot management with the Rural Development Pm~el. <br /> <br />Assistant County Ranger Franzak provided S~Dkey Bear programs to Cub Scouts and <br />the YMCA. <br /> <br /> <br />
