STATE OF NORTH CAROLINA
DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION

RALEIGH 2761 $

JAMES B, HUNT. JR. WILLIAM R. ROBERSON. JR.
GOVERNOR August 23, 1982 SECRETARY

The Honorable Ralph C. Bonds
Chairman
Cabarrus County Board of Commissioners
Route 1, Box 185-A
Concord, North Carolina 28025

Dear Mr. Chairman:

Just a note to remind you that our department has scheduled the week of
September 11-17, 1982 for our fall "Clean Up Litter" campaign. Once again we
need the help of your local civic clubs and organizations to make this
cooperative effort successful.

We are pleased that Governor Jim Hunt has designated tile first day of the
campaign as "Youth Involvement Day." That day various youth groups across the
state will be helping us pick up litter. By involving these young people,
we're educating them on the litter problem and focusing their attention on
litter costs which total approximately $2.2 million each year.

During the "Clean Up Litter" campaign, we will provide at least three
transportation litter pick-up crews in each county to work with your
volunteers and workers on this combined effort. Our district offices
throughout the state will supply large litter bags and pick-up service at
designateo points along our state roads. Bumper stickers, posters and buttons
will also be available. To obtain these materials and coordinate our
activities, please contact:

Mr. T. [. Patterson
Box 6qO
Albemarle, North Carolina 28001
Telephone: 704/982-0101

You may advise him of the locations you feel need particular attention.

For your information, we are enclosing a list of those who participated in the
"Clean Up Litter" campaign last spring. If groups from your area helped in
the spring, we thank you for your support and hope you will join in our effort
again this fall. For those areas not showing representation~ we hope to add
your name to our next list~ If, by cbance, you note that a group which
participated in our "Clean Up Litter" program does not appeal' on the list,
please let us know.
