~ EXTENSION North Carolina Stat~ University
School of Agrictdture and Life Sciences
~~ SERVICE

Addreaa reply to:
County Extension Office
P. 0. Box 38? Phone: ~82-0212
Concord, MC 28025
September 2, !982

Mr. Charles D. McGinnis
Cabarrus County Manager
P. O. Box 707
Concord, NC 28025

Dear Mr. McGinnis:

This ia a request to coat-share a mico-compuger for the Cabarrus Agricultural
Extension Service office. The cost-share would be with the Notch Carolina Agricultural
Extension Service, in which they would pay approximately $4,000.00 if Cabarrus County
would pay approximately $2,500~00. I believe this $2,500.00 is presently in our
budget that could be utilized. This amount of money could be transferred from th~
FICA and group hospitalization portion of our budget.

The age of the computer is on os. The use of computers in agriculture is expected
tO advance very rapidly during this period of the 1980's. A large n~mber of counties
have already purchased computer~ for their Extension Offices. Several of our leading
farmers are already interested in the use of computers in their operation and need
assistance from our office.

Some of the areas we would expect to use this computer over the next several years
would be as follows:

t. Field crops programs. Programs would involve budgeting, rent comparison,
soybean variety programs, cultural practices, etc.

2. Livestock programs would include sow evaluation program, record of
farrowing, pig performance gain information, swine ration program.

3. Determining vegetable budgeting and practices.

4. Home economics would utilize programs in the area of house buying, family budgeting, etc.

5. Administration would involve utilizing better and ~p to date mailing
lists and helping to make our work more efficient.

It is important that we begin getting into this area. It will take time for our
people to become trained and qualified to assist our clientele into this new fleld.
Therefore, I recommend that this purchase be made.

Cooperative Extension Work in Agtgctdture and ttome Economics A& Tand A~ C.
