Cobarrus County '
Department of Parks and Recreation

P.O. Box 707 Concord. N.C. 28025 Phone 704-786-7411

Wi~llarn K. Co'.~.'on - Director
December 15, 1982

Charles D. HcGinnis
County Manager
Cabarrus County
P. O. Box 707
Concord, N. C. 28025

Dear Mr. McGinnis:

Attached you will find specifications for athletic field lighting poles
advertised for bid in the Concord Tribune on December 1, 1982. The
poles will be used to provide lighting for A. L. Brown High School
Baseball Field, two fields at Frank Liske Park, Winecoff School Baseball
Field and four Tennis Courts at Central Cabarrus High School. The
funds for these poles were approved by the Cabarrus Board of County
Commissioners in the Recreation Department's 1982-83 Fiscal Year Budget.
In addition, all of the poles with the exception of the Frank Liske Park
Bid, are funded titrough the Department's Matching Grants Program with
the comnunity paying at least 50% of the cost.

The Bid opening is scheduled for 3:00 P. M. on Friday, December 17, 1982.
Therefore, because of agenda deadlines, ! am not able to provide you with
a Bid Tabulation Form at this time. However, ! will have this available
at the Commissioners meeting on December 20, 1982.

You may note in the specifications that we have requested a base bid and
two alternates. The base bid is a combination of Douglas Fir and
Southern Yellow Pine, alternate#1 is all Southern Yellow Pine and alter-
hate #2 is all Douglas Fir. tt is common knowledge in the pole industry
that the Douglas Fir is a straighter pole. However~ as far as durability
and longevity of the pole, both are equal in quality. If cost is not
too prohibitive the Commissioners may elect to purchase Douglas Fit',
particularly on the taller poles, in order to have a more attractive
finished product.

Once I have had a chance to review the bids I will provide you with a
recommendation on Monday prior to the Commissioners Meeting. If you have
any questions concerning the attached proposal please feel free to contact
me at your convenience.

Sincerely,

William K. Cowan, Director

cc: Cabarrus Board of Commissioners
