CtlM,LE~GE ADVEMTURE EXPERIENCE <br /> <br /> The Charlotte Outdoor Educational Center ha~ agreed to providm two Challeege <br />orograms and a tubing trio during the summer months for youth referred ~o them <br />from the Cabarrus County i{ilderness Adventure Proeram. The Charlotte Outdoor <br />Educational Center proposes to ~nstitute an outdoo~ program to encourage and <br />build self-esteem, self-confidence, and problem solving. To accomplish these <br />objectives the program will utilize what can be described as m progression <br />course where the children work on £ndividual activities, then small-group sttivi- <br />ties. and them move on to large group activities. The program places emphasis <br />on listening and co~unication, and the instructor and client critique events <br />performed. It is envisioned that this program will serve 16 youth, both male <br />and female,' between the ages of 10 and 17. All participants will be referred <br />from local agencies s~ch as Juvenile Counselor Service and Public Schools. The <br />Task Force will be'responsible for devisinK an appropriate referral form and <br />establishing a screening committee to consider all referrals to the program. At <br />least 80% of all participant~ in the program will actively be on juvenile pro- <br />bation or conditionel release. <br /> The summer program will consist of two two-week co-educational ~challenge <br /> adventure programs. This program will take place at the Charlotte Outdoor <br /> Educational Center in Charlotte. Campers will recieve proper, certified in- <br /> structlon in rappelling mountain.climbing, and proper trail behaviors. Peer <br /> pressure will be utilized to motivate the camper to perform to the best of his/ <br /> her abilities. It is envisioned that 8 youths will be served in each of the <br /> two sessions. Each summer Challenge program will las~ ~wo w~eks and run from <br /> 8:00 A.M. ~il 5:00 P.M. on Tuesday and Thursday. Campers will be transported <br /> to and from the Charlotte Outdoor Educational Center in Charlotte ~ia bus. .~: <br /> The second segment of the Challenge Adventure Experience will be a tubing <br /> trip. The Charlotte Outdoor Educational Center proposes a tubing trip as an <br /> added incentive for those campers involved in the two week summer'segment. It <br /> is envisioned to send 12 youth to Charlotte to participate in this segment. <br /> This se.~ment will be centered more on water safety and group cohesiveness- The <br /> tubing experience will consist of tubing down a river and an overnight campinK <br /> exgerience. Campers will he encouraged to learn wilderness cooking, back- <br /> pa~king sod practice proper trail behaviors. The campers will be transported <br /> to Charlotte on a Tuesday and retur~ to'Concord on Wednesday. <br /> Before a child actually participates in a camping experience he/she must <br /> attend a minimum of three counseling sessions. These sessions will be staffed <br /> by local workers who will be ~oing on ~he camping experiences with the youths. <br /> At these sessiod9 all necessary parental and medical consent froms will be <br /> reviewed and signed. Efforts will be made to include the campers parents in <br /> this phase of the program. Purpose of the pre-trip counseling sessions will <br /> be to discuss personal and group goals in relation to the upcoming trip upon <br /> completion of the camping phase of the program the c~mper and his parents will <br /> be encouraged to attend post-trip counseling sessions to discuss program effec- <br /> tiveness. <br /> This proKram will be staffed by one employee of the Cabarrus County Parks <br /> and Recreation Department and on adult volunteer. Employees of the Charlotte <br /> Outdoor Educational Center, who will be in charge of the'program are ~11 certi- <br /> fied in their outdoor activity specialty. <br /> <br /> <br />
