It should also be noted that
significant improvements are currently underway ~n the
KannapolSs school system. It is appropriate that the
County government appropriate funds to extend the useful-
ness of recreation facilities~ planned or being constructed
- by the Kannapolis ~chool board. Since the school board%~
specific plans are not completed at this time, it ~s
difficult to estimate the cost of such improvements. A
particular need is for lighted tennis courts, and the
County might, as an example, light the new courts which
are currently being constructed at the new Middle School.
As indicated in Chapter ~I, th~ Kannapolis has major present
needs, and tc the extent that these needs can be met on
school properties, this program should be implemented.

4. Land Acquisition - Harrisburg Area

The Harrisburg area experienced an approximate 50% growth
in population during the decade of 1960 - 1970, and while
1980 projections show a more modest growth rate to
approximately 3,600 people, the physical and demographic
settings for the township indicate that it will continue
to· grow more rapidly than many other sections of the
County. This fact, combined with the willingness of the
Harrisburg City Council to contribute to the development
of recreation, make it essential that adequate land areas
be set aside to meet future needs. It is, therefore,
recommended that a minimum site of 12 acres conveniently
