Depend~ncy'R~tio indicates that the segment of the population between the
ages of 15 and 64 inclusive ~s growing relative to the o~her popula?ion se§merits
mentione~.

The educational component of the g aucoma-diabe~es program represents fhe
long range ~otential for eventual neductio~ of more severe consequences of
diabetes and glaucoma in Cabarrus County, Th~s education encompasses much more
than patient instruction concerning medication, The key to control and preven-
tion is family education, Several factors bear this out. First, the hereditary
predisposition toward diabetes is documented. A married couple with one
parent being diabetic has a 4.3% chance of 3roducing a diabetic offspring.
With both parents diabetic, a i0,7% possibility exists, Family education can
increase awareness of these facts.

Second, obesity is the factor with the strongest relationship to the

risk of developing diabetes. Families with a predisposition to diabetes must
be aware of preventive measures through proper diet.

Third, awareness of the relationship between pregnancy and diabetes is
i'mportant in insuring the health of the mother and child. The present frequency
rate of diabetes and pregnancy is 13 to 33 births per ],000 births. Education
during prenatal care concerning diet, exercise and risk avoidance can
substantially reduce this figures.

TABLE 1

Dependency Ratio and Index of Aging 1960-1970

1960 1970

Overall Dependency Ratio 60.4 55.6
Youth Dependency Ratio 49.6 42.2
Aged Dependency Ratio 10.8 13.3
Index of Aging 21.8 31.6

3
