CABARRUS COUNTY
Post Office Box

CONCORD. NORTH CAROl,INA 28025

TO: Charles McGinnis/County Manager P1 i~'y~g
FROM: W. S. Chandler, Jr./Director of ann

RE: Van Truck for Sign Installation/Maintenance
DATE: May 22, 1979

Pursuant to our conversation as concerns the need for an
enclosed van type vehicle for~use in street sign installation/
maintenance, I enclose the following information.

The presemt sign installation/maintenance program utilizes
the County owned Dodge pick-up. This truck is used by other
departments, especially by the Maintenance and th'e Parks and
Recreation Departments in grass mowing season. The truck is
not always available when signs are in need of repair or other
installations are needed.

This proposed enclosed vehicle would be purchased from State
Surplus and would cost approximately $2,000, complete with
equipment boxes (for rivets, caps and assorted hand tools),
mounted vise (for straightening blades and posts in the field),
electric power (for drill and miscellaneous fittings).

This money would be allocated from monies not spent this year
by the Planning-Community Development Department.

At the present time, approximately 45 minutes is spent in
loading and unloading equipment each day from two different
locations. This enclosed vehicle would eliminate this delay
and items such as sacrete would always be in the "dry".

I have already talked with Mr. George Williams, the State
Surplus Property Officer, and have been assured that he would
notify us of the availability of such a vehicle.

The employment of this proposed vehicle would make our sign
installation/repair a more efficient operation. This vehicle
would be of a particular benefit when the five additional CETA

I
