funds that are required to match this grant. The group is developing a set
of local history exhibits that will be permanently displayed in the Main
Building. Eastern Cabarrus has sponsored the nomination of the campus, and
two adjoining buildings, to the National Register of Historic Places. The
nominatio~ has been forwarded to the Keeper of the Register for final action.

The broad base of support for historic perservation in Concord and Cabarrus
County is reflected in other activities as well. The Concord daily newspaper
printed a popular windshield tour of the County's historic buildings during
the Bicentennial su~er; the Gold History Corporation, a citizen group that
provides financial support for the Reed Gold Mine State Historic Site near
Georgeville, has received numerous contributions from Cabarrus County residents.
Most significant, however, is the visibly increased interest of Cabarrus natives
and newcomers to the County in owning, preserving and living in houses of historic
and architectural significance. This interest is widely co~ented upon by local
realtors, and has glve~ birth to a contracting firm specializing i~ the repair
and restoration of nineteenth and early twentieth century homes.

The proposed project will directly involve the ma2or countywide preservation
organization, Historic Cabarrus, Incorporated, which will provide a sizeable
proportio~ of the local matching funds. The project will also involve private
individuals engaged or seeking to restore or rehabilitate historically and
architecturally significant buildings. The expanded printing of the inventory
publication wilt acquaint a muc~ broader public with the historic resources of
Cabarrus County, and produce wider recongition of the properties held by
private individuals. Finally, the nomination of properties to ~he National
Register of Historic places will afford recognitio~ that may stimulate present
owners to better maintain or restore such properties. Nomination may also
facilitate, where necessary, the conversion of significant properties to new uses
by private owners.

B. Goals

The project is proposed to promote the following objectives:

1. To provide recognition of buildings and groups of buildings in Concord and
Cabarrus County that are associated with people and events that have contributed
to the broad patterns of American History, or are notable examples of American
Architecture. Such recognition can be obtained by making the publication of tile
Comprehensive Con~unity Inventory more widely available, and by nominating
eligible p~'operties to the National Register of Historic Places. This favorable
publicity may encourage owners to better maintain or to restore such properties,
and may e~courage newcomers from other parts of the United States to invest
in these buildings as places to live and work.

2. Expanded publication of the Comprehensive Con~unity Inventory will create
more interest and broader understanding of the heritage and culture of Concord
and Cabarrus County among the general public. Through conversations with several
printing concerns, the Concord Planning Department has learned that the funds
presently budgeted for printing the inventory publication, $3,800.00, will
suffice to print about 400 Copies of the document. Demand for the publication
is certain to outstrip this number. A sizeable proportion of the several
