Mr. Troy R. Cook, Chairman
Mr. Ralph C. Bonds, Co~nissioner
Miss Marcelle Milloway, Commissioner
rY. James W. Lentz, Commissioner
Mr. J. Ray Allen, Commissioner
Cabarrus County
Post Office Box 707
Concord, North Carolina 28025

RE: Cabarrus County Ambulance Station
Cabarrus County, Concord, North Carolina

Dear Co~missioners,

Your letter, dated December 12, 1979, to Mr. William Cherkas has been
referred to me for response. This office makes every effort to ensure
successful solutions to problems of accessibility to handicapped per-
sons without undue hardships to building owners. In my opinion, the
solutions we would have suggested to comply with the code ~uld have been
much simpler if the plans had been submitted at an earlier stage in the
design process.

We strongly reco~end your installing a small toilet,' similar to the one
in the attached illustration, on the lower level of the buildinm This
will afford convenience to those working in this area as well aZ providing
reasonable accomodation for a handicapped person in this area, whether
working or when the building is used during fund raising events (barbeques,
etc.) or by touring school groups. With increasing pressure from federal
sources, the necessity of such provisions may be more apparent.

Showers need not have a seat, which could be installed at a later time, as
could a flexible hose for the shower head. If Door 100 is continually
available - for instance, by employees using keys during "off" hours - the
current provisions should be sufficient.
