The
IVlC Program is a federally funded program to provide certain foods to women
in the prenatal stages, lactating women and infants and children up 1;9 five
years of age who are found to be in need. Mrs. Pilkington indicated that
46% of the students in North Carolina were below the national growth standards.
She estimated that we could reasonably have 1,000 patients on this program
after the first year of operation. The main aspect of the program would be
nutrition education to the patients and the coammity. It was estimated
that the cost of the food program during the first },ear of operation would
approximate $196,109. Twenty-two percent of thi. s amoUnt or $4.3,i44 could be
used for support perso~mel in the form of secretary, dietitian and equipment.

Sixteen counties in North Carolina now have such a program. Dr. Linny Baker
indicated that prematurity was the leading cause of infant deaths and thought
much of the irmaturity amy be due to the lac~k of proper nutrition oh behalf of
the mother during the prenatal stages. Dr. Baker made a motion, seconded by
Dr. [lallace Early, that the health'department proceed with plans to develop
an application to secure this supplamental food program for Cabarrus County.
Passed unanimously.

2_
