Klimas <br />SUBJECT: S~nary of Health Department Activities, May 1978 <br /> <br /> ~le following is a brief s~mmary of some of the significant highlights of the <br /> health department activities during the month. <br /> <br /> 1. May %~as National High Blood Pressure month. The health1 de~t conducted a special <br /> screening clinic for the general p~bliC at the Carolina Mall' on May 27. <br /> <br /> Several clinics were held for poptilations at risk of developing or having high blood <br /> pressure: screenings were done at the three congregate feeding sites for the elderly, ~n <br /> the Venereal Disease Clinic at the health depar~nent, and for a group of State Bureau of <br /> Investigation agents. <br /> <br /> A total of 1,112 people were screened during the month of May. Of this number, 56, or <br /> 5%, were referred to their physicians because of elevated blood pressure readings. <br /> <br /> 2. The contract period for the EPSDT program (Early Periodic Screening, Diagnsis, and <br /> Treatment Program for Medicaid eligible children 0-21 years) began May 1, 1978. During the <br />- month, 77 children received child healtk clinic services under the EPSDT Program. <br /> <br /> 3. Preparations %~re made to institute the WIC (Woman, Infants, Children) Supplemental Feeding <br /> .P~ .o~ram on June 1, 1978. The primary activities in this program during May centered around <br /> n~rlng personnel with these federal funds and getting co~mittments from area grocers to accept <br /> WIC vouchers for prescribed foods for program participants. <br /> <br /> 4. Scoliosis screening activities were completed in all schools for fourth, fifth, and sixth <br /> graders. A total of 2,849 children was screened by public health nurses a~d 30 children were <br /> referred to physicians for furrier evaluation of this potentially handicapping orthopedic defect. <br /> <br /> 5. The mosquito control program got into full swing during the month. A comprehensive program <br /> of spraying and fogging to control the mosquito population is in effect. <br /> <br /> 7. The Board of Health Septic Tank Regulations ~re approved by the Cc~pmission for Health <br /> Services. <br /> <br /> 8. Insi~cted the food service facilities for the "World 600 Race" at the Charlotte Speedway. <br /> <br /> 9. Planned a new education appreach to Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever with the Epidemiology <br /> Section of the Division of Health Services and representatives from N.C. State University and <br /> Duke University. During the month, seven cases of Rocky bbuntain Spotted Fever were reported. <br /> Cabarrus County has the distinction of bavinn the highest reported incidence of Rocky Mountain <br /> Spotted Fever than any county.in :the nation ~ith a population of over 50,000. <br /> <br />10. The Cabarrus County Food Service School was featured as a model program at a Food Service <br />Training Program at N. C. State University. <br /> <br />11. Oral Cancer Screening was conducted at 3 of the feeding sites for senior citizens. Screening <br /> was conducted by Dr. Mae Safrit, Public Health Dentist. <br /> <br /> <br />
