March 19, 2012 (Regular Meeting) Page 990 <br />WHEREAS, LifeShare Of The Carolinas is focused on saving lives by <br />increasing participation in the North Carolina organ, eye and <br />tissue donor registry; and <br />WHEREAS, April is observed as National Donate Life Month with unwavering <br />support from the nation's donation and transplantation community; <br />and <br />WHEREAS, LifeShare Of The Carolinas, the organ procurement organization <br />that serves Cabarrus County, is a part of that community and has <br />its own programs to highlight the importance of donating to save <br />the lives of others; and <br />WHEREAS, Over 3,400 North Carolina residents and 110,000 people nationwide <br />are in need of life - saving transplants; and <br />WHEREAS, Residents of Cabarrus County have been touched by donation as <br />recipients of life - saving transplants and as members of donor <br />families who have literally given others a second chance at life; <br />and <br />WHEREAS, It is an honor and privilege to have some of those residents in <br />attendance at the Board of Commissioners Meeting of Cabarrus <br />County to present the Board with a Donate Life flag. <br />NOW, BE IT RESOLVED, we, the members of the Cabarrus Board of County <br />Commissioners do hereby proclaim the month of April, 2012 to be <br />NATIONAL DONATE LIFE MONTH <br />In Cabarrus County and urge our residents to give serious thought to the <br />importance of eye, organ and tissue donation and if so desired, to join the <br />North Carolina Donor Registry and further, to notify their family members <br />that they have done so. <br />Adopted this the 19 day of March, 2012. <br />/s/ Elizabeth F. Poole, Chairman <br />Cabarrus County Board of Commissioners <br />C -2) BOC - Proclamation Declarinq March 21, 2012 as "Kick Butts Day 2012" <br />Cabarrus Health Alliance Teen Task Force members Addison White (Senior <br />at Jay M. Robinson), Emily Gale (Junior at Northwest Cabarrus) , Chris Dotson <br />(Senior at First Assembly Christian School) , and Bo White (Sophomore at Jay <br />M. Robinson) presented statistics on teen smoking and announced a "Kick Butts <br />Day" event will be held on Wednesday, March 21S from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. at Les <br />Myers Park in Concord. Volunteers will pick up cigarette butts at the Park. <br />Chairman Poole read the proclamation aloud. She also recognized Megan <br />Poole, Cabarrus Health Alliance Program Coordinator, in attendance. <br />UPON MOTION of Commissioner Measmer, seconded by Vice Chairman Burrage <br />and unanimously carried, the Board adopted the Proclamation Declaring April <br />2012 as National Donate Life Month in Cabarrus County and the Proclamation <br />Declaring March 21, 2012 as "Kick Butts Day 2012 ". <br />Proclamation No. 2012 -03 <br />Proclamation Declaring March 21, 2012 as "Kick Butts Day 2012" <br />Whereas, nationwide, nearly one fifth of all high school students (grades 9- <br />12) are current smokers; along with nearly one out of every fourteen eighth <br />graders; and <br />Whereas, three million high school students are current smokers; and more <br />than a third of all kids who ever try smoking a cigarette become new regular, <br />daily smokers before leaving high school; and <br />Whereas, one out of three youth smokers will ultimately die prematurely from <br />smoking- related diseases, unless current trends are reversed; and <br />Whereas, smoking kills more than 400,000 Americans each year, representing <br />more deaths than from AIDS, alcohol, car accidents, murders, suicides, drugs <br />and fires combined; and <br />
