<br />February 20, 2006 - Regular Meeting <br /> <br />Page <br /> <br />498 <br /> <br />(C) RECOGNITIONS AND PRESENTATIONS <br /> <br />(C-l) Recognition of <br />Receiving the Pro patria <br />Guard and Reservists <br /> <br />Vulcan <br />Award <br /> <br />Materials Company <br />for its Outstanding <br /> <br />Mideast Division on <br />Support of the National <br /> <br />Chairman Carruth stated Vulcan Materials Company was <br />recognized for its support of the National Guard and Reservists. <br /> <br />recently <br /> <br />vice Chairman Juba read the following proclamation and presented it to <br />Dave Ford, Area Sales Manager for Vulcan Materials, and Guy Medlin, Gold Hill <br />Quarry Plant Manager. <br /> <br />PROCLAMATION <br /> <br />WHEREAS, Vulcan Materials Company is the nation's largest producer of <br />construction aggregates, primarily crushed stonel sand and gravel used in <br />nearly all forms of construction; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, Vulcan's Mideast Division is headquartered in winston-Salem <br />and operates over 60 crushing and sales facilities in North Carolina and <br />other states, including the local Cabarrus Quarry and Gold Hill Quarry, and <br />employs approximately 1,300 people; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, the Mideast Division recently received the Pro Patria Award, <br />the highest award given to civilian employers, from the North Carolina <br />Employer Support of the National Guard and Reserve for outstanding support of <br />its employees and their families who serve our country both at home and <br />abroad as Guardsmen and Reservists; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, Vulcan Materials has long been recognized as a good corporate <br />citizen for its commitment to the environmentt its employees and the <br />communities that it serves; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, Vulcan Materials through the years has been a strong supporter <br />of Cabarrus Countyts Park Systemt providing price reductions or donations of <br />rock materials for parking lots, trails and other facilities at County parks, <br />and whereas Vulcan has provided the same to Cabarrus County Schools and many <br />other non-profit organizations. <br /> <br />NOW, THEREFORE, the Cabarrus County Board of Commissioners hereby <br />congratulates Vulcan Materials Company for having received the Pro patria <br />Award in recognition of the company's contribution to its employees and the <br />nation and thanks Vulcan Materials for its continuing support of the men and <br />women who serve our country and for its commitment to Cabarrus County and its <br />citizens. <br /> <br />This the 20th day of February 2006. <br />/s/ Robert W. He thanked the Board for the recognition and expressed <br />appreciation to the guardsmen and reservists for the vital role they play in <br />protecting our freedom. <br /> <br />(D) INFORMAL PUBLIC COMMENTS <br /> <br />Chairman Carruth stated the Informal Public Comments would be divided <br />into segments, including general comments and comments regarding the jail and <br />justice center project. He opened the meeting for the general comments at <br />6:38 p.m. He stated each speaker would be allotted three minutes. <br /> <br />Bill Smith, resident of Kannapolis and past President of the Building <br />Industry Association, stated the Association's 250 members include not only <br />homebuilders, but residential and commercial developers, contractors, <br />engineering and design firms, etc. He said the members could help build <br />Cabarrus County if given the opportunity and asked that the Board involve the <br />stakeholders from the building industry in future considerations before the <br />Board. <br /> <br />Reverend Dennis Briggs presented a sign that stated "King Coy Privette <br />saint or Satanist." He commented on the distribution of religious videos by <br />his church at local schools and issues involving the Cabarrus Baptist <br />Association and alleged influence by Commissioner Privette. He stated there <br />were negative things that need to be examined in the County. In closing, he <br />read from Romans 6:1. <br />
