September 26, 2006 (Recessed Meeting) Page 127
There was general agreement the old Tribune Building should be
demolished. The Board then discussed the projected abatement and demolition
costs and how to move forward with the process.
Mr. Day suggested the Board could approve a maximum amount for the
abatement and demolition costs. He said staff would receive informal bids and
negotiate with firms for the work.
The Board discussed a maximum amount of $90,000.00 or $120,000.00 for
the abatement and demolition. Commissioner Carpenter objected to any amount
over $90,000.00.
Chairman Carruth suggested the Board could authorize an amount up to
$90,000.00 in order for the process to begin. He said the Board could
consider additional funding, if needed, during the meeting on October 9.
Mr. Milligan commented on the timetable for the jail construction
project. He reiterated that the old Tribune Building was in the critical path
of the project.
Commissioner Carpenter asked if the demolition of the old Tribune
Building would change the scope of the Jail construction project and if a
change order would be necessary.
Mr. Day explained the County would be responsible for contracting for
the abatement and demolition of the old Tribune Building. He said the
demolition would not change the scope of the jail construction project and a
change order would not be required.
UPON MOTION of Vice Chairman Juba, seconded by Chairman Carruth and
unanimously carried, the Board authorized the County Manager to spend up to
$90,000.00 on the abatement and demolition of the old Tribune Building and
approved the appropriate budget amendment. Further, the Board authorized the
County Manager to sign all associated contracts, subject to the review by the
County Attorney, for the abatement and demolition of the building.
Recess of Meeting
There being no further business to come before the Board, Chairman
Carruth recessed the meeting at 6:55 p.m. until 3:30 p.m. on October 9, 2006,
in the Multipurpose Room at the Governmental Center.
Note: These minutes were prepared by the former Clerk prior to her
retirement.
Clerk to e B r
