<br /> UPON MOTION of Commissioner Fennel, seconded by Commissioner Privette and
<br />unanimously carried, the Board approved nunc pro tunc the following Proclamation,
<br />which was presented at a Breakfast held on January 19, 2002.

<br />PROCLAMATION
<br />
<br /> WHEREAS, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was born on January 15, 1929 in
<br />Atlanta, Georgia; ~nd
<br /> WHEREAS, Dr. King was an ordained minister and a main leader of the civil
<br />rights movement in the United States during the 1950's and 1960's; and
<br /> WHEREAS, Dr. King was awarded the 1964 Nobel Peace Prize for leading
<br />nonviolent civil rights demonstrations; and
<br /> WHEREAS, Dr. King, along with several other black ministers, founded the
<br />Southern Christian Leadership Conference in 1957 to expand the non-violent
<br />movement against racism and ~discrimination; and
<br /> WHEREAS, January 21, 2002, marks the 16tn observance of the birthday of Dr.
<br />King as a national holiday.
<br /> NOw, THEREFORE, I, Robert M. Freeman, Chairman of the Cabarrus County Board
<br />of Commissioners, do hereby proclaim January 21, 2002, as Martin Luther King, Jr.
<br />Day in Cabarrus County and urge all citizens to join in the activities planned
<br />in celebration of this event.

<br />Resolution Establishing Filing Fees for Candidates for County Commissioner and
<br />Sheriff
<br />
<br /> 'UPON MOTION of Commissioner Fennel, seconded by Commissioner Privette and
<br />unanimously carried, the Board adopted the following Resolution.

<br />Resolution No. 2002-01
<br />
<br />RESOLUTION ESTABLISHING FILING FEES
<br />FOR CANDIDATES FOR
<br /> COUNTY COMMISSIONER ~ SHERIFF
<br />
<br /> WHEREAS, filing for the Year 2002 candidates for County Commissioner and
<br />Sheriff begins on February 18, 2002, if approved by the Justice Department; and
<br /> WHEREAS, the Cabarrus County Board of Elections has requested direction in
<br /> establishing filing fees for these offices; and
<br /> WHEREAS, North Carolina General Statute 163-107 fixes the filing fee for
<br />County Commissioner and Sheriff at one percent (1%) of the annual salary for each
<br />office; and
<br /> WHEREAS, the annual salary for a County Commissioner is $9,904.60 and the
<br />annual salary for the Sheriff is $81,934.34.
<br /> NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED the Cabarrus County Board of Commissioners
<br />hereby sets the following filing fees for the 2002 Election and directs that this
<br />information be forwarded to the Board of Elections:
