136 <br /> <br />She complained of inadequate restrooms, excessive noise from window air <br />conditioners, exposed antique radiators, small classrooms, lack of storage space, <br />and the potential for fire hazards, including the lack of a sprinkler system, <br />inadequate wiring, wooden floors, and the steep fire escapes. Ms.. Bewley asked <br />the Board to fully fund the schools budget request and to levy additional taxes <br />for new schools and renovations. <br /> <br /> Mr. Steve Shepherd, President of the Cabarrus Arts Council, asked for <br />continued financial support of the Arts Program in the county. The local match <br />enables the Council to receive State Arts Council funding which it in turn <br />distributes to various organizations in the county. <br /> <br /> Ms. Andrea Palo spoke on behalf of funding for the schools. She complained <br />of overcrowded conditions and the lack of equipment at Northwest Middle School. <br />Ms. Palo called for a better learning environment for the students. <br /> <br /> Ms. Kareen Scott, Executive Director for Meals on Wheels, thanked the Board <br />for its support of the Meals program. She reported that the County's allocation <br />provides for 7,000 meals per year for homebound individuals. <br /> <br /> Dr. John Benbow, former member of the Parks and Recreation Commission, <br />stated the County should begin to purchase land for parks and athletic fields. <br />He stated his willingness to pay more taxes to fund the schools, purchase land <br />for parks, and develop recreational facilities. <br /> <br /> Commissioner Carpenter presented information and plans for modular school <br />facilities such as those located in Orlando, Florida. <br /> <br /> There was no one else present to address the Board, and Chairman Barnhart <br />closed the public hearing at 8:08 P.M. <br /> <br /> The Board agreed to meet at 8:00 A.M. on Friday, June 10, for review of the <br />proposed FY 1995 budget. <br /> <br />Chairman Barnhart recessed the meeting of the Water and Sewer District. <br /> <br />Recess of Meeting <br /> <br /> There being no further business to come before the Board, Chairman Barnhart <br />recess the meeting at 8:15 P.M. until 8:00 A.M. on Friday, June 10, 1994. <br /> <br />Clerk to the Board <br /> <br /> <br />
