CONCO
q
CABARRUS
COUY
d`9
RM^ Cm
AREA LAND USE PLAN
ABOUT THE PLAN
THE PLANNING AREA
Incorporated in 1973, the town of Harrisburg is located
in Cabarrus County adjacent to Mecklenburg County.
Harrisburg is a growing suburban community that sits
directly in the path of future metropolitan growth. It is
known regionally as a great place to live and raise a family
It is in close proximity to the University of North Carolina
at Charlotte and the Charlotte Motor Speedway (CMS).
Also, it is a 30 -minute drive from Uptown Charlotte and is
within five miles of 1-485, which connects to 1-85 and 1-77.
The quality of life it offers and its position in the region
are a couple of the many attributes that make this area
an ideal location for people of all ages and a wide variety
of businesses. In recent years, rt has been attracting most-
ly residential development. With the completion of 1-485
beltway around Charlotte, it is becoming increasingly more
appealing to businesses.
Encompassing 17,000 acres, the Harrisburg Planning Area
includes incorporated and unincorporated areas. Cabarrus
County uses the small area plan concept for long range
planning. The Harrisburg Planning Area is one of seven cur-
rently designated planning areas. These planning areas typi-
cally encompass municipalities and areas outside the munic-
ipalities, like Extra Territorial Jurisdiction (ETJ) areas, future
annexation areas or utility service areas. Using the small area
concept allows for a more detailed study of the area.
G-1
AWachmenl number 5 \n
Page 130
