Memo
To: Board of Commissioners
From: Jonathan B. Marshall, Deputy County Manager
CC: Michael K. Downs, County Manager
Date: 828/2018
R Surplus of Historic Items
The Board had asked to staff to explore other options for the County to retain and display of these items.
In addition, we requested more information from Histodc Cabarrus about their intentions and treatment of
the items.
The two options thatwe identified for Countydisplay are atthe Governmental Centeror one of the libraries.
Al of these items were displayed together in a case in the lobby of the Governmental Center. They were
moved when the cases with the military uniforms were installed in the lobby and have not been displayed
since then. That remains an option but there is very little wall space for another case particularly as we
host events in the lobby.
We contacted the library director and the response was similar. They could not identify a permanent
location for display within any of the libraries.
The following is the response from Histodc Cabarrus where the items have been on loan for display:
"Currently, the items are on display in the Concord Museum. As the space we have in the Histodc
Courthouse is currently very small, I'm not sure that we will be able to keep them on constant display.
However, I would like to keep them in the museum, and in the event that we do get a larger space in
the future, I would love to have these items on permanent display for all to see and enjoy.
If I do have to move the items into storage, we would be housing them in archival safe materials in our
archives. I am currently working on reorganizing our archival space in the Belk Building so that the
archives can be open to the public a few days a week and by appointment. If the items were moved to
the archives for short-term storage, I could have them on display in our Reading Room where they
could be seen and enjoyed by visitors.
Again, were currently in the process of finding a permanent home for our Museum and Archives to be
housed together. Historic Cabarrus Association, Inc. currently houses many amazing artifacts and
documents, including the letter from Stephen Cabarrus thanking the council for naming Cabarrus
County after him after we separated from Mecklenburg County.
We are very protective of these items and work to ensure that they are housed appropriately, and try to
rotate out items that we have in our archives to share the history of Cabarrus County with everyone. My
background is in archival work and conservation, so I am dedicated to caring for these artifacts.
Thank you! Ashley'
E-1 Page 64
