Caraway, of New Bern, North Carolina, while President General of NSDAR, was
instrumental in getting September 17-23 officially proclaimed as Constitution Week in 1955. After
receiving a copy of the DAR resolution, which had been sent to members of Congress, Senator William
F. Knowland of California proposed the resolution on the floor of the Senate. It passed both Houses and
President Eisenhower issued a proclamation on August 19, 1955 (63 years ago). The fust observance of
Constitution Week was so successful that the following year Senator Knowlmd introduced a Senate
Joint Resolution to have the President designate September 17-23 annually as Constitution Week. The
resolution was adopted on July 23, 1956, and signed into Public Law 915 on August 2, 1956.
The Cabarrus Black Boys Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution, start our annual celebration
of Constitution Week by asking the Mayor of our hometown and the Mayors of towns and cities in
surrounding areas to sign a Constitution Week Proclamation for the citizens of their cities. We hope you
will join us in this endeavor again this year. Attached is a sample proclamation that may be used. It
would also be outstanding if your signed Proclamation could be posted on your Facebook page,
Newsletter, and/or Website for the citizens to see. As Chair of our Constitution Week Committee, I
would be happy to pick up a copy of the Proclamation to post in the main Concord library for an to see.
My contact information is below.
Thank you so much for your participation in this historic event. It is always so encouraging to know our
community leaders are helping to preserve our Constitution, Thank you for all you do to promote the
ideals of the Framers of the Constitution.
Sincerely,
Donna J Delaney
Donna Johnson Delaney
Constitution Week Chair
Cabarrus Black Boys Chapter NSDAR
Contact Information:
1221 Innis Avenue
Kannapolis, N.C. 28081
Djdelaney72112@gmail.com
C-2 Page 59
