Planning and Zoning Commission Minutes
March 19, 1992
,

Page 25

stands now are going to have to remove all of their
signs. Some of them have even started talking to the
sign companies about reprinting signs to be black and
white so they are not without this marketing tool. So he
thinks it is important for the board to go ahead and
address this issue now.

Mr. Amos said he would like to make a statement. The
changes here are definitely moving the board in the right
direction so he is in favor in that regard.

Mr. Olio-Mills asked who made the motion.

Mr. Hartgen stated he made the motion.

Mr. Olio-Mills asked Mr. Hartgen would he consider taking
out within 1 mile in number 1.

Mr. Hartgen said item 1, was not really the issue here,
the issue is not the distance, but how many signs do you
have out. He might go further than that and allow a
realtor to put up a maximum of 2 signs. But whether they
are within 1 mile or not, the number is 'what is
important.

Mr. Amos asked is this saying if you have a subdivision
of 100 houses, is it two hundred signs or two signs.

Mr. Newton said it is saying that off premise directional
signs guiding potential buyers to real estate is only
permitted at up to two street intersections, then at each
intersection you may only have up to 4 different signs.
The practicality of that is that you only have one sign
at each intersection and you can have two intersections
to get to that property. That means that if a real
estate business like Century Twenty One has seven houses
in the same direction, they will be using two signs to
direct people to those seven homes. If they only have
one home at that same location they will have two signs
at those intersections directing people to that one home
It is not a tie of two signs per lot.

Mr. Amos asked is there a way the wording can be
clarified.

Mr. Olio-Mills said he does not see how the board is
going to help somebody out like Mr. Prince or anyone else
if we are telling them they are going to have to build
within 1 mile of an intersection.
