5 . <br />The District Conservationist gave the following report of accomplishments <br />during the month of February 1970: <br />6 Radio Programs <br />27 ' Cooperators assisted ( with 21 first visits) <br />2 Agreements signed <br />2 Conservation Plans <br />291 Acres of Land adequately treated <br />113 Acres of Pasture & Hayland Planting <br />23 Acres of Woodland Improvements <br />0, <br />Mr. Price reported that he attended a meeting in Greensboro, N. C. on <br />February 6th for a training session on minnimum tillage. <br />On February 18th, Mr. Price spoke to the Cub Scouts at St. James <br />Catholic Church as a part of the requirements for them to meet on <br />Conservation work. <br />Mr. Price presented a slide series on Soil and Water Conservation to <br />the Mt. Pleasant Lions Club on February 26th. The Watershed program <br />was reviewed that pertains to the Mt. Pleasant area. <br />Committee Reports: <br />Education: <br />a. Prior to the regular meeting, the District Supervisors, Associate <br />Supervisors, Watershed Commissioners, District office personnel, <br />teachers, parents and friends were invited to the auditorium of <br />A. T. Allen School to hear the Annual Soil and Water Speech <br />Contest of the six final contestants of the seventh grade <br />students of the Cabarrus County Schools. This is a part of the <br />Educational Project sponsored each year by the Board of Soil and <br />Water District Supervisors under the supervision of Dr. R. Brown <br />McAllister. Mr. Jerry Sigmon, teacher at Winecoff School, opened <br />the program calling on Miss Becky Garmon for the Invocation. The <br />six contestants presented their speeches from drawing a number. <br />The contestants were: CONNIE MASON-WINSCOFF SCHOOL-KIM MEDLIN- <br />MT. PLEASANT SCHOOL, CATHY TOWNSHEND T <br />11ARRISBURG SCHOOL, PAMELA <br />POE-ODELL SCHOOL, MARK COCHRAN-HARTSELL SCHOOL and DAVID BLACK- <br />BETHEL SCHOOL. Each speaker was to be judged on (1) Poise and <br />Confidence (2) Speech construction (3) Accuracy of material and <br />(4) Effectiveness in speaking. Each Speaker used topics on Soil <br />and Water Conservation. Chairman Coltrane introduced the judges <br />and thanked them for taking part in the program. The judges were: <br />Mrs. Bess Oxidine, English teacher at Cannon High School in <br />Kannapolis, Miss Sarah Walker, City Schools Instructional <br />Supervisor, Mr. Lewis W. Dameron, Area Conservationist and Mr. <br />George Monk, Insurance Executive. At the conclusion of the last <br />speech, the judges retired from the auditorium to judge first, <br />second and third place winners. Chairman Coltrane, at this time, <br />introduced the Supervisors, Associates, Watershed Commissioners <br />and their wives. He also introduced the District office personnel. <br />Chairman Coltrane expressed his thanks and appreciation for <br />himself and all members connected with the Soil-and Water <br />Conservation District, to Dr. R. Brown McAllister for the <br />excellent work he has done in creating the Conservation programs <br />in all the County School seventh grades. <br />
