MINUTES -2- April 1, 1997 <br />4.3 Central Cabarrus High School has registered a team in the Envirothon this year. This will be the first <br />team to sponsored by the district. Dates for the Envirothon are 4/17 -18 at Cedarock Park in <br />Alamance County. <br />4.4 Programs presented include: Hartsell School, Central Cabarrus High School, Avondale <br />Presbyterian Church and Gardner -Webb University. <br />4.5 April is Environmental Awareness Month. National Wildlife Week, "Nature's Web: <br />Communities & Conservation" is 4/20 -26. Soil & Water Stewardship Week, "Backyard <br />Wildlife," is 4/27 -5/4. Materials will be distributed. <br />5. NC Agriculture Cost Share Program - Richard Taylor <br />5.1 Foil & Wallace contracts have been approved by Division <br />5.2 Robert Morrison Contract for CC -T has been completed and Request for Payment will be <br />prepared. <br />5.3 Discussion of spot- checks; dates and letters to be mailed. Supervisors decided to conduct <br />spot -check 4/17/97. <br />6. Watershed improvement commission <br />6.1 Jack Rankin was reappointed by the county commissioners to a 6 -year term. Tommy Porter is <br />the new chairman, Kenny Morrison is the vice - chairman, and Jack Rankin is the <br />secretary - treasurer. <br />6.2 100 water - supply watershed boundary signs are being ordered. <br />7.3 A videoconference workshop on drinking water supply protection, sponsored nationally by <br />the League of Women Voters and locally by the Health Department. Tommy Porter, Jack <br />Rankin, and Dennis Testerman attended. <br />6.4 Drainage and erosion complaints continue to come in and are being investigated. <br />6.5 An article in the Cabarrus Neighbors on 3/27 discussed growing problems in the county with <br />runoff and erosion and the impact on streams. <br />6.6 Centralina Council of Governments revised the draft erosion and sedimentation control <br />ordinance again in February after the county manager directed the planning and zoning staff <br />to make revisions. Next meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, 4/8. <br />6.7 A Conference on "Toward Forming A Statewide Watershed Coalition was held at Catawba <br />College on March 22 with 100 persons attending. Dennis Testerman attended. <br />7. NATURAL HERITAGE ADVISORY COMMITTEE <br />7.1 Windshield survey by HARP began on 2110; 2 days /week are being spent in the field. <br />Already some sites have been located with a rich diversity of spring wildflowers. Contract <br />with the NC Wildlife Resources Commission for an aquatic survey is being processed. <br />Advisory committee meets on the 1st Monday of each month in the Ag Center; next meeting <br />is 417 at 7 PM. <br />8. Old Business <br />8.1 Matt reported that the Conservation Awards Banquet had been canceled for this year. There <br />was some discussion on future plans and funding. <br />8.2 Dennis brought up the Conservation Farm Family nomination from Cabarrus for this year. <br />MOTION: THAT THE MESIMER FARM BE SELECTED AS CONSERVATION FARM FAMILY. <br />M) MORRISON, S) MOOSE, C. <br />9. Mary Kollstedt started <br />her new duties on March 16, 1997. <br />
