Tom Wetmore, Assistant State Conservationist for Field Operations for the <br />Salisbury Area Office, retired on July 02, 1999. Michael Washington is the <br />Acting AstC -FO until the position is filled. <br />Warren Wittmann, Resource Conservationist for the Salisbury Area Office, <br />retired July 02, 1999. <br />4. Education and Technology Transfer Report — Dennis Testerman <br />4.1 The Independent Tribune carried a press release on July 18 about the Resource <br />Conservation Workshop that included pictures of local participants Katharine <br />Autenrieth and Amanda Ryan. The Cabarrus Neighbors ran the same press <br />release on July 11 th without pictures. <br />4.2 Stories about the state conservation farm family celebration appeared in the <br />North Carolina Pork Producers Council's magazine and the North Carolina Farm <br />Bureau paper. Interviews with the Porters also ran on the Farm Bureau <br />television and radio programs. The Porters were nominated for the 1999 <br />Governor's Awards for Distinguished Service to Agribusiness in the agricultural <br />production and environment category by state association president Jeff <br />Turlington. <br />4.3 The annual Down -To -Earth workshop was held July 12 -14. Fourteen teachers <br />participated, including one from Stonewall Jackson School. Additional <br />workshops may be offered during the school year for Cabarrus County teachers <br />if there is enough interest. <br />4.4 The state Environmental Education Advisory Committee met in Seagrove on <br />July 27. The Office of Envirommental Education is making plans to report <br />annually on the impact of environmental education programs carried out by state <br />agencies. <br />4.5 The Board of Education of Cabarrus County Schools will recognize four <br />students for regional and state accomplishments in conservation education at <br />their meeting on August 9 at the Cabarrus County Governmental Center. <br />4.6 Room reservations requests have been made for the coming year. The essay and <br />public speaking contest is scheduled for December 6 and the recognition banquet <br />is scheduled for May 2. Other district events will have to be planned for other <br />dates or locations due to scheduling conflicts in the building. <br />5. NC Agriculture Cost Share Program — Ken Couch <br />5.1 INFORMATION /CORRESPONDENCE <br />5.1.1. District did not have to attend July 21, 1999 Soil and Water Commission <br />meeting on behalf of Virginia Foil's extension request (13- 97- 04 -16). <br />Extensions are not granted on sod -based rotation contracts. Staff will <br />write a new contract for Virginia Foil. <br />MOTION THAT BOARD ACCEPTS FOIL CONTRACT IN REWRITTEN <br />FORM. M /MORRISON, S /STUDDERT, MOTION CARRIED. <br />5.2 REQUEST FOR PAYMENT <br />52.1. W.F. Troutman (13- 99- 06 -16): Longterm No -Till incentive contract. <br />Beans have been planted in >80% residue from wheat crop. <br />
