Cabarrus County Public Library
• Spanish language collections of Adult Fiction, Nonfiction, and Audio have circulated only
1,743 times between 2010 and 2016. Youth collections proved slightly more popular, with
5,453 total circulations, but are still drastically lower than English language collections.
Holdings are considered out of date underdeveloped.
• Out of a system -wide staff of 59 individuals, only one part -time employee is fluent in
Spanish, while four identify as having some ability. None of these positions are dedicated to
Spanish language services.
• No marketing materials are currently distributed in Spanish for either services or programs.
Outreach opportunities are currently limited due to language barriers and lack of materials
or services to promote.
• No library programs are currently offered in Spanish or with Spanish components; this
includes digital literacy classes, which have been an expressed need from current CLC tutors.
Z. INTENDED OUTCOME
Information Access: Improve users' ability to discover information.
Through outreach and improved services to Cabarrus County's Hispanic and Latino communities,
CCPL intends to improve users' ability to discover information. This project will include services to
improve English language skills, basic literacy and digital literacy, with the added intent to increase
awareness of library resources for information access and lifelong learning.
3. PROJECT DESCRIPTION
a. What do you want to solve or address regarding the problem stated above? Include target
numbers for what will be better or different for library users.
As reported through conversations with CLC literacy tutors, current ESOL /LEP students, and
representatives of the Hispanic community, most individuals are not aware of library resources, or have
difficulty accessing them due to language barriers and lack of relevant materials. While no formal data is
currently available (annual patron satisfaction surveys have previously been issued in English only),
Cabarrus County Public Library intends to solve the lack of resources for Hispanic library users through a
multifaceted approach to create a more inclusive, welcoming environment:
EZ Literacy & Lifelong LehmgrrI number 1 \n
G -4 Page 223
