We would ask that you endorse this letter to the
Cabarrus and Rowan lawmakers with us.
We do believe that our legislators had very good intentions when they passed a
class size bill last year. However, we don't believe they fully understood the negative
implications. By placing a class size restriction without flexibility, the law immediately
creates classroom space issues and teacher allocation issues. Under the legislation that
was passed earlier this year, our school district will need a minimum of 11 extra
classrooms. We will need to purchase 8-10 mobile units at a cost of about $99,000 per
unit (including purchase, set up, utilities extensions, furniture, and technology). We will
need 10-12 extra teachers and approximately $50,000-$60,000 of local funds to pay for
the local supplement for those teachers, in addition to possibly losing art, music and PE
teachers. HB13 will correct this issue and give us the flexibility to maximize the benefit for
our students. We ask you to please vote in favor of HB13.
We thank you in advance for your support and for your service to Cabarrus
County.
Sincerely,
Kannapolis Board of Education
Todd Adams, Chair
Chip Buckwell, ECI.D., Superintendent
G-6 Page 236
