In 2010, Cabarrus County had a total population of 178,011. The racial breakdown is as <br />follows: 77.5% White, 17.2% Black/African American, and 5.3% Asian, Native <br />American and /or Other. In 2010 many of the minority concentration areas were located <br />near or in the cities and towns of Cabarrus County. Map 1, page 11, illustrates <br />concentrations of African American populations which were located in and around the <br />City of Concord and City of Kannapolis. Black/African American populations are the <br />largest minority population in Cabarrus County so Black/African American census tracts <br />were used to determine minority concentrations. (Census 2010, US Census Bureau). <br />Cabarrus County was 8% Hispanic in the 2010 US Census. There is a 2010 Census map <br />showing Hispanic concentrations by census tract in Cabarrus County on Map 2 on Page <br />12 of this document. <br />Between 2010 and 2014, the population of Cabarrus County increased from 178,011 to <br />191,080, an increase of 7.3 %. Much of the increase in the past four years is due to in <br />migration as Cabarrus County has benefited from the strong economic growth of <br />Charlotte, which is a financial center. Cabarrus County has had positive residential <br />growth in both the rental and owner occupied markets in the past four years. <br />The data for this portion of the analysis was derived from the 2000 and 2010 U.S. Census <br />data, 2009- 2013 American Community Survey, and NC Statistics website from the State <br />Demographer's Office. <br />Total Households, Types and Size. The 2009 -2013 American Community Survey <br />indicates that there were 72,575 housing units in Cabarrus County at the time of the <br />survey. Homeowners occupied 47,286 or 65.2% of the units, while renters occupied <br />17,427 of the units accounting for 24 %. Homeowner occupied units have decreased 8% <br />since the last survey. The overall vacancy rate is 10.3 %. The owner - occupied vacancy <br />rate was 2.5% while the renter - occupied vacancy rate was 12.1% for this review period. <br />The 2009 -2013 American Community survey statistics for detailed housing information <br />such as overcrowding are as follows: the overcrowding rate for Cabarrus County was <br />2.2% with 1470 units being overcrowded. The term overcrowded in this document is <br />defined as more than one person per room. The overcrowding rate is about the same as <br />the state average which was 2.3% in 2013. <br />Low Income Minority Households and Minority Concentration Areas. <br />Black/African American and Hispanic households comprise a large portion of the <br />minority households in Cabarrus County; 17.2% (32,806) and 5.3 % (10,258) <br />respectively (2009 -2013 American Community Survey). According to the 2010 U.S. <br />Census, Township 4 of Kannapolis and Township 12 of Concord were the townships that <br />contained the highest concentrations of minorities in Cabarrus County; however, for the <br />first time Township 1 Harrisburg and Township 2 Poplar Tent had census tracts that had <br />over 15% minority population. These areas correlate to Census Tracts 405, 407, 413, <br />419, 421, and 425. Map 1, on Page 11, illustrates the Minority Concentrations in <br />Cabarrus County according to the 2010 Census. Black/African Americans are the largest <br />minority in Cabarrus County. Concentrations are defined as areas with greater than 15% <br />Black/African American population.
