concentration standard in Cabarrus County in the 2010 Census. It should be noted that a <br />number of the census tracts were subdivided from the 2000 Census which contributed to <br />the increases in the number of minority concentration districts. <br />Elderly Population. In the 2009 -2013 American Community Survey, there were 21,145 <br />elderly (65 years +) persons in Cabarrus County. This equates to 11.7% of the population <br />of Cabarrus County. This same survey finds 2,058 grandparents living with <br />grandchildren. Eighteen percent of elderly persons were below the poverty level in the <br />2009 -2013 American Community Survey. Fourteen percent of those households over 65 <br />showed the grandparents as the responsible party for the grandchildren. Of the 20,085 <br />elderly, 4,986 were living alone (2009 -2013 American Community Survey). Map 4, on <br />Page 14, illustrates the concentrations of elderly individuals. The concentrations, <br />according to 2010 Census data, were located in Census Tracts 407.03 and 424.01. These <br />tracts are located in the Cities of Kannapolis and Concord, respectively. For the purpose <br />of this analysis, grandparent has not been defined as persons 65 years old or older. <br />A. Income Data <br />1. Household Income. According to the 2009 -2013 American Community Survey, <br />the 2013 Median Household Income in Cabarrus County was $53,551 which was <br />down from $54,274 in 2009. In 2000, Cabarrus County had only 7.1% of the <br />population living below the poverty line. The 2010 Census showed an increase in <br />people living below the poverty line to 13.2% (US Census 2000 and 2010). The <br />per capita income of Cabarrus County was $25,257, down from the estimate of <br />$26,128 in 2009. Map 3, on Page 13, illustrates the income concentrations of <br />Cabarrus County. The lowest income concentrations coincide with many of the <br />census tracts with high concentrations of minorities. <br />B. Employment Data <br />1. Employment. The 2012 Economic Census indicates that retail, food services, <br />healthcare, government, and manufacturing provided the most employment in <br />Cabarrus County. Major employers in the County are CMC Northeast Medical, <br />Concord Mills Mall, Cabarrus County Schools, Connextions, and local <br />governments ( Cabarrus Economic Development website 06/15/2015). Since the <br />last Analysis of Impediments there has been an increase of jobs in the <br />Professional, Scientific, and Technical Services, Accommodation and Food <br />Services, and Other Services market that indicates a changing local economy <br />(2013 Economic Census, See Appendix A) <br />2. Transportation. Since the 1990's, there have been changes in the transportation <br />patterns in Cabarrus County. In " Cabarrus County, An Overview," the study area <br />showed a large percentage of the workforce commuting to Mecklenburg County <br />( Cabarrus County, An Overview, 1993).
