N LOCALLY GaOwN <br />COOPERATIVE <br />EXTENSION <br />�1 er /J <br />LJNC cxAxr OnT <br />College of Arts + Afchitecture <br />Sth-1 ofA hll ... <br />Lomax Agricultural Learning Center <br />Program Development Plan <br />201 4 - 201 7 <br />and when appropriate participate in relevant local, regional, national and international <br />forums on this topic. <br />UNCC is in the process of creating a relationship with the Center for Environmental <br />Farming Systems (CEFS) which is a collaborative effort between NCSU, NC A &T and <br />NCDACS. CEFS operates the Cherry Farm Sustainable Research Station in Goldsboro, <br />NC and there is a push within the university system for inter - university collaboration. <br />Lomax could help provide a platform for this collaboration between NCSU, NCA &T and <br />UNCC in our region of North Carolina. <br />UNCC IDEAS will work with partnering organizations in the development of <br />educational programs, research, development and policies related to sustainability and <br />farming to include: <br />• Implementation of major collaborative educational projects <br />• New or improved farming methods and technologies <br />• Holistic planning, design, and construction for sustainable communities <br />including integrated building and sites <br />• Implementation of major collaborative research projects <br />Three areas of research of specific interest include: <br />Urban Composting <br />The goal of this project is to put into place an urban composting program that will <br />produce compost for starting and growing plants in the greenhouse(s) at Lomax. <br />The targeted primary feedstock is food waste from community food banks, the farm <br />and Cannon School cafeteria. <br />Anaerobic Digestion <br />The goal of this project is to design and build a low -cost anaerobic digester for food <br />waste that will produce biogas for heating the greenhouse(s) at Lomax. Once it is <br />completed it will serve as a demonstration project for local farmers. <br />Attachment number 3 <br />G -2 Page 179 <br />
