BENEFITS TO USERS
This project is designed to improve patron experiences and knowledge with computers and related technology
in order for them to achieve their personal goals and enhance their lives. Library patrons at each of the four
libraries will learn the same concepts and techniques through consistent lesson plans for classes. This will
ensure that patrons have the knowledge needed to take additional classes. For example, the knowledge learned
at a basic computer skills class at the Concord Library will prepare patrons for a MS Word or Internet searching
class at the Harrisburg Library because the instructor will not unnecessarily repeat information or skip needed
information because they know what patrons have already been taught. Also, patrons who take a specific class
at any library will know what information will be presented at the class because the goals for each class will be
publicized.
Library staff and literacy volunteers will be trained to present programs in a systematic, yet effective manner.
Library staff will be able to present more classes and a larger variety of topics for patrons because preparation
time will be greatly reduced since they will not have to create new lesson plans.
Literacy students will be exposed to computers. They will learn to use computers to help them achieve their
literacy /reading goals and will also enable them to navigate job applications on the Internet, a skill that is
especially important as many major employers will only accept online applications. Many of the adult basic
literacy students do not own a computer, nor do they have computer access, these classes in the library will
provide both computer access and training. The partnership between the Literacy Council and the Public Library
hopes to introduce new adult readers to the library and develop them into lifelong library users.
Library patrons will be taught how to effectively use online databases, including those offered through NC LIVE.
This will improve research and other skills as well as increase use of those databases.
Classes will be advertised in the library's monthly newsletter (print and electronic), the library's website and
Facebook page, through fliers and other means in the library and through library staff. Classes and information
for literacy tutors and students will be advertised through the library's resources as well as the Literacy Council's
quarterly newsletter, email updates to tutors and the Literacy Council's active Board of Directors.
Library staff and literacy volunteers will be trained throughout the year so that after the grant funding is done
they will be fully equipped to teach all classes. Library staff training will be done on Fridays when the library is
Attarr.hmant nnmh 1
Literacy & Lifelong Learning Project Grant, 2013 -2014 page 4 of 7
F -8 Page 103
