<br />The Department of Commerce tracks announced and planned jobs and investment across the state on a
<br />quarterly basis. The second quarter of 2010 showed significantly more announced jobs than the previous
<br />quarter, but less than the same period last year. When compared to the previous quarter (first quarter 2010),
<br />there was significantly more planned investment.
<br />Note: The values above represent announced or planned jobs and investment and are measured from when the jobs
<br />and /or investment were announced. Real values may prove to be higher or lower and may occur over multiple years.
<br />Foreclosures increased; home sales and building permits dedirll
<br />Data from the North Carolina Association of Realtors reveal a 13% increase in foreclosures between September
<br />and October and a 40% increase from this time last year. In North Carolina there are approximately 35,000
<br />foreclosure homes. One in every 872 housing units received a foreclosure filing in October, compared to one in
<br />every 389 nationally. Mecklenburg County had the most foreclosure filings in October, followed by Guilford,
<br />Wake and Forsyth. Existing home sales decreased from last month and last year by 8% and 27% respectively.
<br />New housing units authorized by building permits, an indicator of future construction, were up 5% from last
<br />month, but down 14% from a year ago.

<br />exported more than $318.7 billion.
<br />• The value of state exports declined 2.8% over the 2 nd quarter of 2010, but increased 20.9% over the 3rd
<br />quarter of 2009.
<br />• Canada remains North Carolina's largest export destination, representing 21.5% of the state's total exports
<br />to the world in the third quarter, followed by China (8.4 %), Mexico (7.6 %) and Japan (6.7 %).
<br />• Chemical products remain the state's top export, with Canada and Japan remaining the top destinations.
<br />Chemical exports were up 6.9% from the 2nd quarter and 20.1% from the same period last year.
<br />• Other key export goods for the 3rd quarter include machinery equipment (exclude electrical) and
<br />transportation equipment with decreases of 3.7% and 0.9 %, respectively, compared to the last quarter.
<br />• Through the first three quarters of 2010, North Carolina ranked 17th in the nation in value of exports.
