E
Under Bob's leadership, the Working Lands Subcommittee partnered with the Conservation Trust for NC to
secure Tobacco Trust Fund financial support for a Working Lands Guidance Document, delivery of regional
technical training on drafting and monitoring easements, and closing costs on properties where local SWCD
and land trusts partnered to preserve farmland.
While Bob was at the forefront of the community conservation initiative at the state -level in urban and rural
settings, he was looking for opportunities at the local level to broaden the circle of partners involved in
community conservation. When the county initiated an effort to find common ground with municipalities on
growth management in 2005, Bob became a regular participant in dialogue sessions for elected officials and
in community stakeholder meetings. Bob has also taken an active role of participation in support of the
Cabarrus County VAD.
Bob was elected chairman of the Cabarrus District board in 2009, after serving three years as vice - chairman.
In spite of impressive accomplishments by Cabarrus SWCD that mirrored similar pioneering achievements
by the Association under Bob's leadership, Cabarrus County targeted a SWCD staff position during layoffs
in early 2010. Bob initiated a series of meetings between District leaders and county government
counterparts to discuss District contributions to the county. Funding for the District's administrative
professional was restored for FY2011.
Bob has been complimented many times for conservation accomplishments during his short time on board.
Bob's normal response is "I am the Community Conservation Committee chair and a district supervisor. I
did not make this stuff happen. I simply am surrounded by good people who work hard." While it is true
that Bob did not complete the items detailed in this write -up, he did provide the right kind of leadership,
support, and enthusiasm, and he brought together capable people which resulted in success. Bob has met the
challenge as the leader of community conservation.
2
Attachment number 1
C -1 Page 33 3
