C
J
r
SUPERVISOR OF THE YEAR AWARD
2010 ASWCD Awards
NOMINATION FORM for Bob Ritchie
The NCASWCD Supervisor of the Year Award recognizes a District Supervisor who has made
significant contributions to the conservation and proper management of North Carolina's
natural resources. The key qualification is a keen interest in conserving our natural resources
and record of outstanding contributions to the cause of conservation. The winner of the
Supervisor of the Year Award will be submitted for the NACD Distinguished Service Award
by the NC Association of Soil and Water Conservation Districts.
Bob Ritchie has made significant contributions at the local, area and state level since his election as a
member of the Cabarrus SWCD board of supervisors in 2002. Three months into his first term, Bob
participated in the 2003 National Association of Conservation Districts meeting in Orlando, Florida —the
first of four national meetings Bob has been involved in.
Bob Ritchie (in center) being sworn in following his initial election as a Cabarrus SWCD supervisor
Bob Ritchie accepted responsibility as chairman of the Association's newly restructured Community
Conservation committee in 2006. More recently, Bob chaired the Association's Working Lands
subcommittee. Under Bob's cutting -edge leadership, the Community Conservation Assistance Program was
authorized by the General Assembly and created in 2006. During his tenure, this program added staff and
secured cost share funding through state appropriations and grants.
The Community Conservation Committee and the Foundation for Soil and Water Conservation partnered to
offer grant writing workshops and training on liability and fiscal responsibility with holding easements. A
Working Lands Preservation Resource Manual was developed and distributed to districts in 2009. This
manual quickly became the focal point to increase the knowledge and skills of District board and staff
members on conservation easements and other land protection options.
C -1
Attachment number 1
Page 32
