The rows contain the titles
and job statistics for all 11 industries that this analysis considers. The industries are ordered according
to how many people they employed in 2009. The Education and Health Services sector employed the
most workers, so it is first, followed by Trade, Transportation, and Utilities, and the Leisure and
Hospitality sector is third. This area had 63,201 employees in 2009, in all industries including some jobs
that BLS could not classify into the 11 sectors listed in Table 1.
During the period 2007 to 2009, employment in Cabarrus declined by -3562 jobs. In terms of
employment growth, the most important industry was Education and Health Services (529 jobs). It is
followed by Leisure and Hospitality (464 jobs), and Public Administration (366 jobs).
Within a single sector it is possible to observe both of these effects simultaneously. For example, a new
large retailer such as Wal -mart can hire 100 workers or more, but these gains may come at the expense
of retail jobs at smaller shops. The net gain in employment could be either positive or negative. These
effects can be felt more acutely in the rural counties of the country.
