Woodson, who founded Black History Month and spoke of how iniportant
it was to understand die history of all individuals to move forward as a nation, said university President A.L. Fleming.
Establishing Woodson University was an idea Fleming had for a while, after about seven years of working in higher
education.
Fleming previously served as an academic counselor, special assistant to the chief financial officer and assistant the chief
development officer at Elvabeth City State University and was a presidential fellow at the University of North Carolina
system
Most recently, he was the chief advancement officer and interim chief financial officer for Barber - Scotia College, before
leaving last year to serve as the director of development at Saint Augustine s College.
I worked for the university system for a short while and had an idea about how to move a university forward," Fleming said.
He and the board members decided to base Woodson University in Concord because of Fleming s affinity for the area.
I think a group of people here could benefit from the education we could provide and what Woodson could provide to this
area," Flemming said.
In September 2010, the university began the process to be declared exempt from certain standards as a religious institution.
Page I of 2
Attachment number 6
E -1 Page 81
