PROJECT NARRATIVE FOR
19
Applicant Mount Pleasant Elementary School
Project Description - Walking /Running Track located in the Valley. See attached photo #1. We
have been wanting a new track for several years for our students at MPES. We need this track so
that we can offer an easy access for our students, staff, and community to exercise. The closest
track is up a steep grade with difficult steps for Elementary School age children to conquer within a
limited time period. This track will be used by our students during PE classes, as well as during
recess time. It will also be used during our annual Pun Run. We have a brand new Mount
Pleasant Elementary School Running Club that will be using this track to practice and prepare for a
5k. Our PE Teacher said thatthere will be multiple ways for him to use this track during the school
year with his curriculum. Eric Williford, our Physical Education Teacher, said the following:
"I would love to see running/walking track put in at MPES. As a physical educator, this would be a
great addition to what we are able to teach and how we teach it I emphasize running as a lifetime
sport and family involvement in road races (51( "s, etc), so this would be extremely beneficial in
taking my curriculum to the next level. I can see this track benefiting not only our students, but our
community as a whole."
Project Planning - Our Principal, Corey Cochran, came to our PTO and asked us to raise funds
for this track in 2010. We decided to present this project with our other goals for fundraising to our
Parents, Teachers, and Students. We presented this through multiple letters home with students,
at our Monthly Board Meetings, and at our February PTO Meeting. At this meeting we discussed
the track and how we vision it to be used and informed our Parents of the Fun Run in April
designed to raise funds for the school with the track included in those funds.
Public Involvement - Our students participated in the Boosterthon Fun Run on April 20, 2011.
They asked friends and family to sponsor them per lap to help raise funds for our school. One of
the projects we listed to be funded is the new track, as well as, technology and school supplies.
The children were so excited to participant in this run and raised a little over $27,000 for our
school. A $10,000 portion of that has been earmarked for the Track approved at our Board
Meeting on June 2, 2011.
Operation and Maintenance - Cabarrus County Schools
Citizens Served - This track will be used by not only our students at Mount Pleasant Elementary
F -7
Attachment number 5
Page 157
