Draft 1.1— For Discussion Only, Not for Citation
NAICS has several important omissions. The first is self - employed individuals. The
most recent such data from Cabarrus County, in 2009, find that 11,553 people have their
own businesses, most of them home based, and earn $376 million per year. These are
presented in Chart 4.
A further omission from NAICS is farmers. The USDA's Agricultural Census of 2007
gives data at the county level, and shows that Cabarrus County has 611 farms with
66,780 acres. The average farm size is 109 acres. Agricultural production in the county
is dominated by animal productions: poultry and eggs ($37 million in sales per year),
cattle and calves ($25 million), other animals ($15 million). Another $11 million of
crops are grown each year, primarily grains, dry beans, and oilseeds.
The IMPLAN Input- Output model attempts unify various federal databases and fill in the
gaps self - employees, farmers, and government workers. Chart 5 summarizes its estimate
from 2009. At that point, the economy had a workforce of about 87,700 paying $3
billion in wages. The annual domestic product of the county (value- added) was about
$18 billion. Businesses were paying about $1 billion in taxes.
7
Attachment number 1
1 -4 Page 309
