The data show 469 people in the farming sector, suggesting that many of 611 farms
shown in the Agricultural Census are run a secondary businesses or hobby farms.
The County also has nearly 8,000 people working in public schools, and 3,500 people
working in state and local government. Along with the 1,350 people in various federal
agencies and enterprises, some 15% of the workforce resides in the public sector.
Chart 6 compares the percentage of the workforce, with all the IMPLAN corrections, in
the United States overall (in 2006) with Cabarrus County (in 2009). The sectors where
Cabarrus County has a relatively larger percentage of its workforce deployed are
construction, retail, real estate, entertainment, personal services, and local schools. These
categories reflect two implicit choices for economic development —that Cabarrus County
should be a bedroom community for Charlotte, and that to the outside world it should
focus on NASCAR and related tourism. In every other sector of the economy, including
sectors like manufacturing, Cabarrus County has a smaller proportion of its workforce
deployed than the national average. Unfortunately, these are precisely the sectors that
add value and multiply into greater economic vitality.
