Brown High
Application narrative.
The Cabarrus County "One Book One Community" planning committee has planned two previous
community reads in 2008 and 2009. Both of those programs centered on North Carolina authors whose
books featured local themes. For the 2010 program the committee decided to expand its scope with a
book that would be of greater interest to a wider audience. The book selected for 2010 is "The Things
They Carried" by Tim O'Brien. This book was selected for several reasons -the appeal to a male
audience, the inclusion on several high school reading lists, the very timely topic of a foreign war and
the abundance of materials available from The Big Read.
In previous years the "One Book One Community" program has been held during a single month. Due to
the quantity of programs planned for 2010 it was decided that the programming should span two
months. Each member of the "One Book One Community" committee had "adopted" a particular
program or group of programs to be responsible for. They then put together their own subcommittee
to plan the event.
Planned events include:
1) Kick-off. The kick-off includes a traveling Vietnam Wall exhibit, music from the era and
introductory information regarding all of the upcoming events. The local ROTC will also
demonstrate some of their drills. This event should attract a wide range of people in the community
due to the special nature of this exhibit. This is a program that we will rely heavily on volunteers to
help manage the crowds and security for the time that the wall is in place.
2) Book discussions. A large number of book discussions are planned. Since "The Things They Carried"
is a book of short stories some of the discussion groups will center on a particular story and others
will focus on the entire group. We plan to have different community members help to lead these
discussion groups, including an Army doctor who served in Vietnam and also in the current war.
Library staff and others involved in the library book discussion groups will help lead each program
using the discussion questions provided on the Big Read website. These discussion groups will be
held at:
(a) Each ofthe four libraries (Concord, Mt Pleasant, Harrisburg and Kannapolis).
(b) Local VFW -the intended audience for this discussion group are the veterans of the Vietnam
War, their families and the veterans of other foreign wars.
F-5
Attachment number 1
Page 141
