(c) Senior Center -many of those whose lives were greatly affected by the Vietnam War participate <br />in activities at the senior center. <br />(d) Community College -the community college has served as an active partner in the "One Book <br />One Community" program for the last two years. Both students and faculty have been involved <br />with the program. <br />(e) A local high school - a teacher in one of the local high school has already committed to involving <br />her students in the program and reading the book. Library staff and other discussion leaders <br />will help with this group. The Teacher's Guide provided on the Big Read website will be <br />implemented as well. <br />(f) Veteran's Museum -the local veteran's museum is an ideal location for a book discussion <br />group. <br />(g) Local book clubs -the library has been advertising the book selection and many local book clubs <br />have been adding the title to their reading lists for 2010. Many of these groups invite library <br />staff to join them for these discussions to help with the facilitation. <br />3) Special Events. <br />(a) Theater production. The local community theater is currently looking for an appropriate related <br />production to be presented as part of this project. This will be their third year of participation. <br />(b) Film. Several films are being considered for showing in the auditorium of the main library. <br />Among the choices are the film "A Soldier's Sweetheart" which is based on one of the stories in <br />the book. <br />(c) Tribute music. An evening of live music from the era is planned. <br />(d) Middle school book clubs. The library's middle school book clubs will not read "The Things They <br />Carried," but will read a book dealing with the same theme such as "In Country" by Bobbie Ann <br />Mason. They will be able to relate to the other activities and events that are part of the <br />program. <br />(e) Children's program. The libraries will all host a program for elementary school children <br />centered around "The Wall" by Eve Bunting. <br />4) Author Visit. The grand finale of the program will be a visit from the author, Tim O'Brien. He will <br />lead two events - a Q&A event at the community college for students and those in the community <br />interested in creative writing; and alecture/reading at the main library. <br />The library currently has 22 copies of the book. The North Carolina Center for the Book has another 100 <br />copies that they will loan to us for the program.
