NEXT STEPS
Phase I presents an overview of agricultural production in Cabarrus County as provided
by a review of online data sources. It highlights key findings and issues for the County to
consider, particularly pertaining to agriculture and farmers, as it moves forward in
developing a more sustainable food system locally.
Phase II of the Food System Assessment will characterize how food gets from farm to
market in Cabarrus County. Data across segments of the food system will be collected
through a combination of focus groups and individual interviews with stakeholders, two
methods that provide a level of detail not available through online sources. While
information related to production, consumption and waste management will be included
as available, the major focus will be on collecting information pertaining the County's
capacity and existing infrastructure to support processing, distribution and marketing of
locally grown and raised foods.
By focusing on processing, distribution and marketing, Phase II of the Food System
Assessment will identify barriers to local markets as well as opportunities to increase
access to them. A final report will summarize key findings and provide the County with
recommendations for action.
13
Attachment number 2
G -4 Page 522
