William Barber 11 is scheduled to appear at 3 p.m. today at Bethel Baptist Church, on <br />Dale Earnhardt Boulevard. <br />The Cabarrus County Convention and visitors Bureau says the 67th annual state NAACP <br />convention will be held Oct. 6 -9 in Cabarrus County. North Carolina's NAACP chapter is the <br />second - largest in the country, with about 20,000 members and 120 branches. <br />Barber has been a leader of the group opposing recent changes in the Wake County Schools. <br />The school board has voted to adopt a neighborhood school concept, which opponents say will <br />re- segregate the schools. William Barber, a leading organizer In the Oct 2 <br />One Nation March In Washington. <br />Confirmed convention speakers Include labor and civil rights leader William Lucy at <br />the Freedom Fund banquet; Hillary Shelton, director of the NAACP's Washington <br />Bureau and Angela Dunsbon, director of the Office of Citizen and Faith Outreach for <br />the state branch. <br />The N.C. NAACP has taken on a higher profile under Barber, its president since 2005. <br />The civil rights group has led opposition to Wake County's controversial student <br />assignment plan and supported the N.C. Racial Justice Act signed Into law by Gov. <br />Bev Perdue In 2009.
