A review of historic aerial photographs and topographic maps indicates that the subject site has
consisted of undeveloped woodland, open field and farmland. A previously active rock quarry
was present on parcel number 5544724095 and is currently in use as an irrigation source. A
railroad fine is present south of parcel number 5544724095 (Appendix C, Photo 11 }. Adjoining
properties have been historically used as woodland, farmland, commercial and residential
properties.
~• The 1993 United Stafes Geological Survey (USGS) Midland, NC 7.5-minute series quadrangle
was reviewed to examine the topography and drainage of the subject site and vicinity. A 2005
Cabamis County GIS contour map was reviewed and compared to the USGS quadrangle. The
-- ~ maps indicate that the highest elevation is located in the sou#hwest portion and on a knoll in the
northwest portion of parcel number 5544636383 at 535 feet MSL. The site slopes moderately
downward to the northeast and southeast to a low elevation of 480 feet MSL. Drawing 2
represents a portion of the USGS quadrangle that was reviewed. The 2005 Cabarrus County
G1S contour map is included as Drawing 3. Bo#h drawings are incorporated in Appendix A.
1 • No violations or releases of hazardous materials or petroleum products were identified on the
subject site from the govemment record review of the U.S. Environmental Protec#ion Agency
(EPA) database and the North Carolina Department of Environment and Natural Resources
(NCDENR}database.
1 • The govemment record review indicated three releases of petroleum products or hazardous
substances within '/z mile of the subject site. The releases are not considered recognized
i environmenfa! conditions because #hey involved only soil contamination and have since been
J closed out.
• During the site reconnaissance there were no indications of lagoons, stressed vegetation,
underground or aboveground storage tanks, subsidence, monitoring wells, strong odors, sumps,
landitlls or unusual soli discoloration that indicates the possible presence of contaminants on the
subject site.
• On October 6, 2008, fhe owner of the subject site, Mr. Rob Wallace, was interviewed in person to
determine his knowledge of associated environmental conditions. Mr. Wallace stated that he
purchased the properly in the mid 1970's. Mr. Wallace stated fhat to his knowledge there were
no environmental liens, engineering or institutional controls, or land use restrictions on the subject
site. He stated that there were no environmental cleanups, chemical releases, USTs, or ASTs on
the subject site. However, he said that a UST was removed on the southeast portion of fhe
subject site. The UST was located behind a former farm house. Mr. Wallace said there were no
indications of leaks from the UST when it was removed.
Mr. Waltace stated that Superior Stone Company leased the subject site from two different
property owners beginning in 1946 to run a quarry. He said the quarry was in operation for ten to
twelve years and that the quarry was abandoned in fhe late 1950's. He said there was a powder
house associated with the quarry, which is no longer present. Mr. Wallace said there is an
irrigation pump that went from the former quarry area to fhe Corning plant. He is not sure if the
pump is currently in use. He also informed us that there was an onsite rubble field consisting of
Wallace Properly Ph 1 ESA
CES] Project No. 080913.000
October 14, 2008
Page 3
Attachment number 1
G-9 Page 495 of 627
