<br />1. Emergency Public Information (EPI) efforts will focus on specific, event-related <br />information. This information generally will focus on critical topics such as warning, <br />evacuation, and shelter. <br />2. It also is important to keep the public informed of the general progress of events: <br />The County PIO and Emergency Management Department will report the facts as accurately <br />as possible and provide advice concerning necessary protective actions. <br />3. Rumor control will be a major aspect of the information program. The PIO will act <br />' quickly to correct erroneous information wherever discovered, but especially any incorrect <br />reports that originate from the media. <br />' B. Execution <br />1. The County Public Information Officer (PIO} and the Emergency Management <br />Coordinator will develop and conduct public education and information programs to increase <br />public awareness of potential hazards and the steps citizens should take to protect <br />~~ ~ themselves. The PIO will coordinate with media outlets in the county to provide these <br />' ~ programs for their use. <br />2. Tlie PIO will prepare emergency public information documents addressing major <br />' emergencies ~ and maintain these base documents on file for use. ;If an evacuation is <br />imminent, the Public Information Officer will respond to public inquiries and prepare new or <br />modified public announcements. <br />t 3. The Public Information Officer prepares all news releases and public information <br />disseminated at the county level. He will coordinate locations and times for press briefings <br />' and releases. A media/press briefing room will be set up for this purpose at the Sheriff's <br />Department. No media representatives (i.e., reporters, cameramen, etc.) will be permitted in <br />the EOC without the express permission of the Emergency Management Coordinator. If <br />' allowed to visit the EOC, media representatives will be escorted at all times by the PIO or the <br />assistant PIO. <br />4. Additional personnel to support the Public Information Officer will come from <br />different county government departments and agencies as needed. The heads of those <br />departments and agencies will detail and reassign individuals to temporary duties. <br />' 6. The Cabarrus County Public Information Officer will coordinate, as needed, a <br />telephone "bank" to assist county residents in reporting and responding to problems <br />' associated with an emergency situation.
