Carruth, Chairman, Cabarrus County Commission n
From: Robert Keeney, VP/CFO Rowan-Cabarrus Community College l
Date: January 10,.2007
Re: Signature needed on Community College Budget
Gentlemen
You may recall that, in past years, we have requested the signature of the chairmen to
record the County Commissions' approval of the college's budget. Unfortunately, with
personnel turnover, we failed to obtain the required signature when our budget was
originally adopted. This is a routine matter, but a statutory requirement we cannot
ignore, so we are asking for your signature now, midway through the year.
Of course, the Commissions' action in appropriating funds is the act of approval, so the
most important thing from the county perspective is to verify that our budget agrees with
your appropriation. I have included a copy of the notice from each county that specifies
the appropriation of each county, and flagged the place in the document where the
funding from the two counties is reflected, in agreement with the appropriations.
The complete college budget is summarized in the document, and I will be happy to
answer any questions you may have. I'll make a couple of points that I think are
important. The first is that for a combined county appropriation of just under $3.5
million, the total college budget in the two county area is over $46 million. That's
excellent leverage.
I'd also point out that, in the not so distant past, the Rowan County appropriation was
much larger than that of Cabarrus County because the Colleges operations in Rowan
County were much larger. In recent years our Cabarrus operations have expanded and
the appropriations have followed that trend. This will likely continue in the near future as
we complete the new building on our South Campus and operations at the Cabarrus
Business and Technology Center expand.
As always, we are grateful for the continued support of the County Commissions, and
for your assistance in this matter. Please feel free to call me at (704) 673-0760,
extension 350 if you have any questions.
r--~
