The Ways We Gave Back in 2006: <br />Drives and Collections <br />• Cell phones continually <br />collected for CVAN clients <br />• 43 pair of used eyeglasses <br />collected for the Lions Club <br />project <br />• Raised more than $300 for <br />the Community Emergency <br />Fund (CEF) by raffling off <br />two Chocolate Fountains for <br />Valentines Day <br />• DSS Food Pantry Drive in <br />January collected more food <br />than DSS could store <br />• NASCAR Day -collected <br />$ 936 in May for the follow- <br />ing <br />NASCAR Day designated <br />charities: Victory Junction <br />Gang Camp, Speedway Chit- <br />dreri s Charities, Speediatrics <br />• Clothes Drive in July and <br />August for Cabarrus County <br />Sheriff's Deputy who was <br />burned out of her house col- <br />collected many items for the <br />entire family, children, hus- <br />band, and employee <br />• School Supply Drive in Au- <br />gust for CVAN, Church of <br />God, and DSS <br />• Canned food drive at the Fair <br />in September collected over <br />20,000 lbs of food <br />• Meals on Wheels food drive <br />in October collected approxi- <br />mately 15 boxes of food <br />• Helping Hands Christmas <br />Tree Project collected pres- <br />ents in December for 83 chil- <br />dren and adult clients of <br />CVAN, DSS, Cabarrus <br />County Senior Center, and <br />The Arc. <br />Service Projects <br />• Meals on Wheels - volun- <br />teers distribute meals <br />throughout the year <br />CVAN Clean Up Day - vol- <br />unteer employees and family <br />members cleaned and land- <br />scaped two of the homes <br />yards <br />• Salvation Army Bell Ringing <br />at Concord Mills Mall - volun- <br />teers covered 2 days <br />• Special Olympics Fishing <br />Tournament at High Rock <br />Lake -volunteers assisted the <br />EMS/Law Enforcement with <br />the dinner and fishing tourna- <br />ment. The Toumament raised <br />over $20,000. <br />• NC Big Sweep -over 100 vol- <br />unteers collected trash along <br />Cabarrus County water ways <br />• Adopt-A-Highway - volun- <br />teers cleaned Church St in <br />Concord from the Govern- <br />mental Center to Appleby's. <br />This was done quarterly. <br />Walks <br />The Walks Committee com- <br />piled alist of 4 Walks for the <br />Spring. 26 Employees and their <br />family members participated in <br />Relay for Life, Juvenile Diabetes, <br />AIDS Walk, and The March of <br />Dimes Walks. In addition, <br />$529.33 was raised from a <br />spaghetti lunch at the Cabarrus <br />County Senior Center to help <br />with the Walks. Management <br />and Department Heads were <br />waiters and Transportation deliv- <br />ered meals to those who could <br />not come in. <br />Community Emergency Fund <br />The name was changed from <br />the "War Chest" in 2006. The <br />CEF is a discretionary fund col- <br />lected through the Annua] Cam- <br />paign Drive and used to assist <br />Cabarrus County residents dur- <br />ing times of catastrophic events <br />such as mass layoffs, natural dis- <br />asters or home fires. 2006 saw <br />.several catastrophic events in <br />other parts of the US. The hurri- <br />canes hitting the Gulf Coast <br />caused many residents to leave <br />their homes and seek shelter in <br />other areas. Many came to <br />Cabarrus County. hl order to <br />meet the purpose of the CEF dis- <br />bursement, funds were distrib- <br />uted to the Cooperafive Christian <br />Ministry, Salvation Army/Cabar- <br />rus Chapter, and the Red <br />Cross/Cabarrus Chapter to assist <br />in making sure all funds wereri t <br />depleted. <br />Chi committee members voted <br />to appropriate the remaining <br />funds in 2006 to Cooperative <br />Christian Ministry to help with <br />the following: <br />• Local girl with a very rare <br />cancer for her family to <br />make the trips to Pennsylva- <br />nia to be with her during <br />treatments <br />• To purchase bus tokens for <br />CVAN <br />• To purchase bus tokens and <br />children s coats for DSS <br />To purchase 2 Mobile Food <br />Pantry Days <br />• To purchase meat products <br />for the Salvation Army Food <br />distribution program <br />• Money to a Cabarrus County <br />Sheriff's Deputy whose <br />house burned down <br />~- 3 <br />
